Tamil Nadu to celebrate Raja Cholan's birth anniversary as govt function

CHENNAI:  M.K. Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, announced on Wednesday that the state government would begin holding an official celebration of the famous king Raja Raja Cholan's birth anniversary in 2022. In an official statement, the Chief minister noted that the announcement was on the basis of requests received from various quarters.

November 3 is the King's birthday anniversary. Rajaraja Chola’s birth anniversary is celebrated by several groups in Thanjavur on Aippasi Sathayam.

The government is announcing the celebration as a government function, the Chief Minister stated in an official statement, in response to various requests he has been getting from all around the state and from the diaspora. He added that renovations to Raja Raja Chola's tomb in Thanjavur would take place soon. The Chief Minister observed that during Aippasi Sathayam, many people in Thanjavur commemorate Raja Raja Cholan's birth anniversary. The most powerful Tamil King in South India, Raja Raja Cholan, also known as Arumozhi Varman or Arulmozhi Varman, is credited with reestablishing the Chola influence.

In the Chola capital of Thanjavur, he is credited with building Rajarajeswaram Temple, the most important temple in South India.

Stalin also said the mausoleum of Rajaraja Chola in Thanjavur district will be renovated.
