HYDERABAD: Workers of Bharatiya Janata Paty and Telangana Rashtriya Samiti were at loggerheads on Tuesday in Telangana's Munugode Assembly constituency where a by-election is scheduled on Thursday.
When the event in Pulivela occurred, the leaders of both parties were engaged campaigning, and some party workers were injured.
Stones were allegedly thrown at the convoy of BJP MLA Eatala Rajender in the village by some Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) supporters. Stones and sticks were used in the attacks between the two groups. To separate the fighting groups, the police interfered.
Both sides assigned culpability for the attack to the other. Rajender, who had previously been a member of the TRS, claimed that members of the ruling party attacked him when he and his wife visited the village to have lunch with the locals. He asserted that the attack was the work of two ruling party MLAs and two Zilla Parishad chairpersons.
According to the former minister, 30 persons, including his security team and personal assistant, were injured. He claimed that the attack also caused damage to 10 to 15 vehicles.
In the incident, the BJP's publicity van was also damaged. According to the BJP MLA, the BJP cadres shown restraint. "We oppose physical assaults. Our party is conducting a democratic election campaign," he said.
G. Kishan Reddy, the Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, also denounced the attack by TRS members. He claimed that out of fear of losing the by-election, the TRS was turning to physical assaults. He asserted that the BJP will prevail in the state's four Assembly by-elections notwithstanding the violence by the TRS.
In the meantime, TRS attributed the attack to BJP. T. Harish Rao, a minister for finance and health, claimed that because TRS was well-liked by the populace, BJP had lost all hope. In light of the polling, he pleaded with the party officials to exercise prudence.
