Srinagar: In a tragic turn of events on Sunday, terrorists targeted and fatally shot a retired Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) from the Jammu and Kashmir police, Mohammad Shafi Mir. The incident occurred while Mir was offering azan (prayers) at a local mosque in the Gantamulla Bala area of Baramulla district. The Kashmir Zone police reported that the assailants opened fire on Shri Mohd Shafi during his prayers, leading to fatal injuries. The area surrounding Gantmulla, Sheeri Baramulla, was immediately cordoned off by the J&K police, who initiated a thorough investigation into the case. "Terrorists fired upon Shri Mohd Shafi, a retired police officer at Gantmulla, Sheeri Baramulla, while praying Azan in the mosque and succumbed to injuries. (The) area has been cordoned off. Further details awaited," stated the official communication from the Kashmir Zone police on social media. This tragic incident follows a similar act of violence last month when terrorists targeted a police inspector in Srinagar. Inspector Masroor Ahmad Wani sustained severe injuries after being fired upon near the Eidgah mosque. The attack occurred while he was engaged in a friendly game of cricket with local boys at the Eidgah ground. Subsequently, Inspector Wani was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The recurrence of such incidents underscores the precarious security situation in the region, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures to safeguard the lives of law enforcement officers and civilians alike. The authorities remain committed to addressing these security challenges and ensuring the safety and well-being of the public.
