Bengal governor seeks meeting with Press Club Kolkata to discuss move to curb press freedom

Taking another unprecedented step in the midst of a continuing tussle with the Bengal government in a situation like lockdown and corona crisis, Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar along with members of the Kolkata Press Club reportedly stalled the Mamata Banerjee-led government's press freedom in the state Have demanded to discuss the application. On the same, the Governor himself gave information about this by tweeting on Sunday that in the meeting held on Monday with the Executive (Executive) of the Press Club, on many disturbing actions by the Mamta government, freedom of media and criminal cases against journalists etc. will be discussed.

In his statement, he said that as a watchdog, the press clubs at the state and national level need to ensure the freedom of media. Here, a senior official of the Kolkata Press Club said that the governor had demanded talks and they have agreed. A senior journalist and an executive of the press club said that the demand for such talks by the governor is unprecedented in the history of the press club.

Apart from this, he said that the Press Club had not raised any such issue, but the Governor and the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have alleged that the Mamata Banerjee government is threatening the media. Dhankhar's move came in the wake of allegations that some cable-based local news channels had gone off-air and cable operators had shut them down. The move was taken after some district-based journalists allegedly spread fake news. The governor recently asked the state home secretary to call the editor of a prominent Bengali daily at Hair Street police station in Kolkata. I also asked for information. Several other journalists were also questioned by the police regarding the publication of some news. However, the organizations concerned did not raise any issue and did not even publish any report related to it in their news outlets.
