New Delhi: Since coming to power in 2014, the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi started giving priority to Make in India. The Modi government emphasized on manufacturing weapons from mobile phones to the defence sector. Their goal was to generate maximum employment in the country and prevent the foreign exchange from leaving the country. But eight years later, the world's largest importer of military hardware still does not produce enough weapons locally to fulfil its needs, and government regulations restrict imports.
PM Modi's efforts to build India's defence system in the country is weakening the country in the face of threats from China and Pakistan. A Bloomberg report states that the officials concerned have given information about this matter themselves. Officials say that India's Army, Navy and Air Force are unable to import the necessary weapons to replace the old ones. Due to this, India may have a shortage of helicopters by 2026 and there may be a shortage of fighter jets by 2030.
According to PM Modi's program, 30 to 60 percent of the parts have to be manufactured in the country. It depends on how the military procurement is and where the equipment is being procured from. However, earlier there was no such limit and then India used the mechanism of domestic manufacturing to reduce the cost of defense procurement. In such a situation, India's military preparedness is going to decrease and that is when the country is facing threats from China and Pakistan.
