World Championship medallist boxers Amit Panghal and Shiva Thapa have made it to the Indian squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Games by winning the trials here on Thursday. World Championship 2019 silver medallist Panghal has won in the 51kg category while Thapa has also won the trials in the 63.5kg category. Among the other six boxers who have made it to the Indian team are 2018 bronze medallist Mohammad Hussamuddin (57kg), Rohit Tokas (67kg), defending national champions Sumit (75kg), Ashish Kumar (80kg), Sanjeet (92kg) and Sagar (92 plus kg). The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be played in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8. Panghal defeated army boxer Deepak by 4.1 on a split decision. Panghal has also won a silver medal in the last Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast. According to media reports, Panghal's performance at the Tokyo Olympics last year after becoming an Asian champion and winning a silver medal at the World Championships in 2019 was disappointing, in which he was knocked out in the pre-quarterfinals.
