CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peramaippu, a traders' organisation, has asked the state Election Commission to enable traders to carry a minimum of Rs 2 lakh in cash during the urban local body elections. In a petition to the State election commission, the traders association claimed that election commission employees confiscated cash from businesspeople in Vaniyambadi, Tamil Nadu, despite the traders having all of the necessary documentation. Such seizures are having a negative impact on business owners, given the state's trade has already decreased because to the pandemic. The organisation claimed that most small traders would be unable to complete the requisite paperwork, and asked the poll commission to allow such merchants to carry up to 2 lakh rupees in cash if they can produce proof of being in business. It further stated that persons carrying money for university debt repayment and wedding expenses are more likely to be affected because they may not have sufficient proof to present the authorities. The elections for urban local bodies are set to take place on February 19, with nominations closing on February 4.
