KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress has launched a counter-campaign against the BJP, arguing that West Bengal's PM Awas Yojana dues should not be granted because the state government is running the same scheme under a different name.
Trinamool's counter-strategy will be to draw attention to other Indian states that have used the same way of conducting the plan under other names and clearing debts.
On May 12, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting that the state's dues for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and the PM Awas Yojana be released immediately.
Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, wrote to the Prime Minister shortly after, stating that while 32 lakh residences were built in West Bengal under the PM Awas Yojana, the scheme was actually operated by the state government under the name Bangla Awas Yojana. He urged that no central money be granted for this housing plan unless the state government operates it under the name of PM Awas Yojona.
The Trinamool Congress leadership has chosen to highlight incidents with photographic records where states like Uttar Pradesh and Delhi are also implementing the scheme under other names but have not been denied dues.
