UK to host G7 Summit at Liverpool in December

London: The United Kingdom (UK) will host a summit of G7 Foreign and Development Ministers in Liverpool next month, December, the UK government stated in a statement.  Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will host colleagues from the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan, and the European Union (EU) from December 10-12, according to a statement released late Sunday.

Following May's meeting in London, the UK will hold the G7 Presidency in 2021, and this will be the second in-person gathering of G7 Foreign Ministers this year. For the first time, countries from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will attend the Summit. Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, where the Foreign Secretary visited earlier this month, are among the ASEAN Foreign Ministers expected to participate.

"This presence follows that of representatives from Australia, India, South Korea, and South Africa in the May summit. These countries reflect a greater geographic range of countries dedicated to changing and maintaining an international system that allows economies to thrive "according to the statement.  A wide range of global concerns will be discussed, including economic resiliency post-Covid, global health, and human rights.

The Liverpool Summit follows a number of major gatherings in the UK this year, including the COP climate summit in Glasgow earlier this month and Prime Minister Boris Johnson's G7 Leaders' Summit in Carbis Bay, Cornwall, in June.
