Kabul: Officials in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province have stated that the Jalalabad Airport, which has functioned as a military base for US forces for the past two decades, is now open for domestic and international flights, according to media sources.
When the airport in the province capital was used as a military facility, it was not allowed to operate civilian flights. The technical personnel has been recalled to duty, according to Spin Ghar Shahzad, the airport's acting director.
"We have all of the necessary technical capabilities. The entire technical team is on hand. You will witness the flights," Shahzad said. "We assure the citizens and world that the airport is fully prepared for the flights," Residents of Nangarhar, on the other hand, were pleased with the progress.
"Previously, we were required to send our crops from Nangarhar to Kabul, the capital. The crops would then be exported to other countries from there. We will now be able to fly directly from Nangarhar to China "TOLO News quoted Hajji Zalmay, a trader, as saying.
"The reopening of Nangarhar's airport is a positive move. International flights will depart from this location. Nangarhar will earn handsomely from it "Abdullah, a local, expressed his opinion. An Iranian plane bringing humanitarian aid is expected to land at the airport soon, according to officials.
