US Democrats propose vaccine mandate for domestic travellers

Washington: According to local media sources, US Democrats are pressing President Joe Biden to enact a rule requiring all airline passengers to produce proof of full immunization against Covid-19 or a negative test before boarding a domestic aircraft.

"This is a crucial and long overdue step toward helping all Americans feel comfortable and confident when travelling and reducing the possibility of yet another tragic winter surge," a letter signed by over 30 Democrats was cited as saying on Sunday in reports. The letter was reportedly addressed to Biden on November 11 and comes as millions of Americans prepare to travel during the approaching Thanksgiving holiday, which will be observed on November 25 this year, according to media reports.

According to the American Automobile Association, more than 53 million individuals plan to see their loved ones for Thanksgiving this year. About 4.2 million people were anticipated to fly out of the country. People should avoid domestic flights unless they are completely vaccinated against the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Inbound overseas travellers must show confirmation of complete vaccination to enter the country, according to the White House. The Democrats who signed the letter are pressing Biden to extend the mandate to those travelling within the United States in order to reduce the danger of Covid transmission following the holiday season.
