US Open 2022: Collins defeats Cornet and goes up against Sabalenka in 4th round

New York: Danielle Collins defeated Aliz Cornet 6-4, 7-6(9) at the Arthur Ashe Stadium moving on to the fourth round of the US Open 2022. 19th seed for the first time in her career, Collins has advanced to the fourth round of the US Open. She will now play No. 6 seed Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the quarterfinals.

The 28-year-old Collins is one of four American women who advanced to the Round of 16; the others are No. 29 seed Alison Riske-Amritraj, No. 12 seed Coco Gauff, and No. 8 seed Jessica Pegula. Collins has defeated Cornet, Cristina Bucsa, and Naomi Osaka to advance to the second week.   "I'm having the time of my life, to be honest. Playing these night contests is something that we imagine as children, "he said.

In the sixth game of the first set, Collins broke Cornet, and things took off from there. Through the first eight games, she swiftly accumulated 20 victories by applying constant baseline pressure.

Collins played a clean match, committing less errors and exerting physical effort at the baseline, but the French veteran was unable to block Collins because she was unable to find any openings. Her only chance was to trick Collins. But this particular evening, the American did not err.

Both women maintained their serves during the second game. In the first set, there was just one break that separated the two players, but neither lady was able to create a break point in the second.

Neither player was able to gain an advantage throughout the tiebreaker. Cornet saved Collins' first match point at 6-5, levelling the score at 7-7, but Cornet was powerless to stop Collins from erasing a set point with a crisp backhand winner.

Collins' 50th victory of the evening prevented the loss of a second set point. Collins' courageous saves would be acknowledged. After 1 hour and 52 minutes on Sunday night, Collins secured the victory on her second match point.

As far as stats are concerned, Collins played the entire match without being broken, faced just one break point, and sunk 52 winners compared to 29 unforced errors. In the game, Cornet made just 9 unforced errors while hitting 17 winners.

Collins' next opponent is a formidable one. All three previous meetings have been won by Sabalenka, two of which were in the US Open, in the first round of 2018 and the third round of the previous year. Sabalenka enters the match off a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Clara Burel and has only dropped one set to Collins.
