NEW YORK: Aryna Sabalenka carried on her spectacular run in the summer by stunning American Catherine Harrison of the United States to romp into the 2nd round at the U.S Open on Tuesday.
Catherine Harrison, a qualifier who is best known for her skillful doubles performance and is ranked 243 in the world, was defeated by the hard-hitting Sabalenka, who advanced to the semi-finals at Cincinnati and the U.S. Open last year, 6-1, 6-3, on Court No. 10.
According to a report on the official website, the 28-year-old Harrison from Memphis displayed some of the grit that helped her get through the qualifiers without dropping a set and, for that matter, the abilities she cultivated at UCLA, where she played with teammate Jennifer Brady.
Harrison, however, found herself striking defensively while tenaciously pursuing Sabalenka's almost imprecise angles. And the preferred player's mistakes were what ultimately led to Harrison scoring at a score of 1-4. However, the American was unable to hold her serve, and Sabalenka won the opening set 6-1.
During the second set, the 5-foot-11 Sabalenka's strong serve let her down, as the players traded breaks. But this number—12 Harrison's victories to her opponent's 27—tells the narrative of the game. She won 6-1, 6-3 in the second set and the overall contest.
Sabalenka's section of the draw doesn't look like a rough ride: As the No. 6 seed, she ss the top-ranked player. But numbers can deceive-and often do. No.25 seed Elena Rybakina, the reigning Wimbledon champ, is on the road ahead. So is the No. 11 seed-none other than the reigning US Open champ Emma Raducanu.
