Varanasi Court Sets Date to Hear Plea Against Hindu Prayers in Gyanvapi Cellar

A Varanasi court has scheduled February 28th as the date to address the plea submitted by the Gyanvapi Masjid committee regarding the recent decision permitting Hindu priests to conduct prayers in the cellar of the mosque. Additionally, the committee has filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court in opposition to the district court's ruling.

The Varanasi district court, on January 31st, had granted permission for a priest to perform prayers before the idols located in the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi mosque, as stated by the counsel representing the Hindu side. In response, the mosque committee contested the verdict by taking the matter to court.

Advocate M M Yadav informed that Additional District Judge Anil Kumar has designated February 28th for the hearing.

The Hindu party involved in the case also submitted documents to assert their ownership of the disputed property.

Within hours of the Supreme Court declining to hear its plea against the Varanasi district court's decision and directing it to seek recourse from the high court, the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid committee took the matter to the high court on February 2nd.

On January 31st, the Varanasi district court had decreed that a priest could conduct prayers in front of the idols situated in the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi mosque.
