Time has come to promote traditional Indian sports on a large scale: Vice President Naidu

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has recently called for regaining the glory of traditional Indian sports like hockey in the country. At the same time, he has requested the State Governments and corporate institutions to work together for necessary incentives in this direction. A postage stamp was issued in memory of social activist and nationalist Chaman Lal at the Vice President's Residence last Saturday. Meanwhile, he said, "The recent performance of the Indian hockey team at the Tokyo Olympics has revived interest in sports and now it is time to promote traditional Indian sports like Hockey and Kabaddi on a large scale.''

He further said, "We should feel proud of our great tradition and culture. The Indian is endowed with talent in every field and only needs the right encouragement and support. Meanwhile, Venkaiah Naidu emphasized on strengthening infrastructure including artificial turf and also ensuring availability of training and coaching at the grass-root level. He also appreciated the active incentives being given by the Central Government towards Indian Sports." The Indian men's and women's hockey team has made the entire country proud in the Olympics. Despite losing in the semi-finals, the women's team showed their best game throughout the tournament. Analysts have also said that ''the women's team has caught everyone's attention in the last four years. It should be remembered that the women's team had not qualified for the tournament in 36 years until the 2016 Rio Olympics. So we are celebrating his stellar performance at the Tokyo Olympics, which is nothing less of a win.''

Describing Chaman Lal as a great nationalist and visionary thinker at the event, Venkaiah Naidu said, "The philosophy of his life is a feature of service, values and creativity. Despite winning a gold medal in MSc at Punjab University (Lahore) in 1942, he chose the path of service, even though his future was bright, but at the same time he maintained a sense of spirituality in service.''
