Virtual Quad Meeting to hold amid Russia-Ukraine crisis

NEW DELHI: In the midst of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Quad leaders will meet on Thursday to discuss the Indo-Pacific region's developments.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take part in a virtual meeting with US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or Quad, is an informal alliance between the four countries that claims to be committed to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

"After the September 2021 Summit in Washington, D.C., the Leaders will have the opportunity to continue their discourse," the ministry said. They will provide their perspectives and opinions on key developments in the Indo-Pacific.

The Quad leaders will also assess progress on the Leaders' initiatives, which were announced as part of the Quad's current and positive agenda. The war between Russia and Ukraine has entered the eighth day after Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a military operation.

Meanwhile, the United Nations General Assembly, in a resolution backed by 141 of its 193 members, condemned Russia's aggression in Ukraine, reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and demanded that Russia immediately cease its use of force and "completely and unconditionally" withdraw all of its troops.
