Weather Forecast: IMD issues red rain alerts in Maharashtra, Mumbai and more

The India Weather department on Tuesday issued a red alert for five Maharashtra districts, including Raigad and Pune, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places, for the next two days. The IMD has also predicted that During the next 24 hours Uttar Pradesh, north Madhya Pradesh and east Rajasthan have forecast of moderate to severe thunderstorms with lightning. It has predicted Heavy to very heavy rainfall on 20th July over Jammu Division, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana. East and adjoining central India will experience fairly widespread to widespread spells along with isolated heavy rainfall.

The IMD's orange alert for Mumbai between Wednesday and Friday says that heavy to very heavy rain (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm) is likely at a few places in the metropolis. The IMD describes rainfall as 'very likely' when the probability of the occurrence is 51 to 75 percent. A red rain alert also means authorities should take preventive actions such as evacuation of people from vulnerable areas and deploy rescue teams. Marathwada and Vidarbha regions of the state are likely to receive light to moderate showers till Friday, it said.

Meanwhile, it was reported that five members of a family on Monday, involving a couple and their three children aged between three and 12, were killed after a landslide in the Kalwa area in Thane city. The couple’s two other daughters were also injured in the mishap. Four other houses in the area were also damaged.
