Winter Session Chaos: Congress MPs Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala Among 34 Suspended from Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha took action on Monday by suspending 34 opposition members, including Congress MPs Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala, and KC Venugopal, for their role in disrupting Parliament proceedings.

Despite appeals from Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to adhere to parliamentary rules and preserve the dignity of the House, disruptions persisted, leading to three adjournments during Monday's session. This decision followed the suspension of 33 Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Lok Sabha earlier in the day for causing disturbances throughout the remainder of the Winter Session.

The Winter session has been marred by tumultuous scenes since the security breach on December 13, coinciding with the anniversary of the 2001 terror attack on Parliament. Two individuals, identified as Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D, breached security by jumping from the visitors' gallery into the Lok Sabha chamber and releasing colored gas canisters.

Opposition members, particularly from the Congress, have consistently demanded a government statement addressing the security breach incident.

In response to the disruptions, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar urged MPs to comport themselves according to House rules, cautioning against devolving into a "riot brigade" and emphasizing the need to safeguard the dignity of the esteemed House.

The disciplinary measures are reminiscent of the previous week when 14 opposition members, including 13 from the Lok Sabha and one from the Rajya Sabha, faced suspension for their role in disrupting Parliament proceedings.
