With addition of new regions, sectors to MPLADS, Govt broadens its scope

New Delhi: As a one-time measure to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, the Central government has increased the scope of the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) to include provisions for the purchase of Stubble Clearing and Super Seeded Machines, as well as the purchase of testing, screening, and other facilities and the establishment of independent oxygen manufacturing plants in government hospitals and dispensaries.

The Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Rao Inderjit Singh, said in a written response that the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation decided to include new areas and sectors in the MPLADS guidelines to allow Members of Parliament to recommend work. The Minister stated that adding new locations to MPLADS is a fluid process.

"The Ministry reviews fresh recommendations submitted from Members of Parliament or stakeholders and, if found practical and consistent with the MPLAD Scheme's aim, including them in the MPLADS guidelines following appropriate process," Singh added.

The Minister also stated that the Ministry performed a "third party physical examination of the MPLADS works completed in 216 districts across the country between April 1, 2014 and March 2019," according to the Minister.
