Chandigarh: In a major setback to the Manohar Lal Khattar government in Haryana, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore on it. NGT has ordered the Chief Secretary of the Haryana government to deposit an amount of Rs 100 crore as compensation for causing damage to the environment. A bench headed by Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel also constituted a nine-member committee headed by the chairman of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB).

According to the concession agreement, the committee can evaluate the contractor's work. If it is found that the contractor has failed to do his work, then the committee can make alternative arrangements to change him. The tribunal observed that the municipality has failed to manage better for the environment, health and solid and liquid waste near the surrounding forest areas. There is a Bandhwari landfill site in Gurugram, where about 33 lakh metric tonnes of solid waste is dumped over the years.

The tribunal was hearing a case stating that a waste management project was developed and a contract was awarded to a Chinese company – Eco-Green Energy Pvt Ltd – in the year 2017. However, the steps taken for this are not enough, with waste being burnt, leading to considerable air pollution. It not only has the potential to influence the surrounding residents but also includes 193 species of birds, a large number of medicinal plants and more than 80 butterfly species, black buck, golden jackal and leopard in Asola Bhati Wildlife Sanctuary, which are being affected.
