BHOPAL: In an alleged case of honour killing in Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri district, a 23-year-old man was allegedly killed by his wife's family members for allegedly marrying her without their permission.
The incident happended on Sunday when the victim, who was living in Gujarat, had reached to his village in Madhya Pradesh to celebrate Diwali.
The victim, Dheeru Jathav, was killed by his wife Chhaya Jatav's family, said the Shivpuri district police. Both of them are from the same village and community. Without the woman's family's approval, the couple wed in court in 2020.
After getting married in a district court, the couple moved to Ahmedabad out of concern that they could encounter difficulties from the woman's family.
After a two-year absence, Dheeru and his wife returned to their village to celebrate Diwali. On Sunday, his in-laws noticed him.
"They surrounded him and used an axe to kill him. He was instantly killed when the accused struck his neck with the axe. Soon, a police squad arrived on the scene. On the basis of a complaint made by the victim's family, the body was brought for a post-mortem, and a case was filed under section 302 of the IPC "a police officer in the Shivpuri district who is looking into the issue said.
According to the police, up to seven persons, including the victim's father-in-law, have been charged in the case. While looking for the other two, one of the accused was detained.
The police also said that the houses of the accused will be bulldozed.
