Woman caught in Tatanagar carrying 28 pythons, snakes, chameleons worth Rs.50 Cr

JAMSHEDPUR: At Tatanagar station in Jharkhand, a woman travelling with pythons, rare species of snakes, chameleons, and other animals valued at more than Rs 50 crore was detained.

A combination squad from the Government Railway Police, the Railway Protection Force, and the Crime Intelligence Branch made the arrest (CIB).

The Forest department will get the confiscated animals. Devi Chandra, a native of Pune, has been named as the accused, according to RPF in-charge S.K. Tiwari.

He learned about a suspicious woman travelling in the general compartment of the Nilanchal Express from Kharagpur Railway Division.

As soon as the train arrived at Tatanagar station, the woman was recognised and searched. Along with chameleons, spiders, and other creatures, the team also discovered 28 snakes in the sack, Tiwari  said.

The woman admitted under questioning that she received the luggage from a person in Nagaland to deliver to Delhi in payment for Rs 8,000. She travelled a train from Nagaland to Gauhati before continuing on to Howrah, where she boarded a train for Delhi.

She continued by saying she was in contact with the individual who handed her the bag. To take the said suspects into custody, raids are being performed.

To remove the reptiles from the bag, the RPF called snake catchers. A 25 crore rupee albino python and two sand boas were saved. In addition to this, 19 ball pythons and 4 red pythons were discovered in 9 boxes, Tiwari said.
Another box included twelve chameleons, beetles, and spiders. Eight chameleons and one snake were discovered to be deceased. According to Tiwari, these species' venom is used to create narcotics.
