Srinagar: Several leaders, government employees, and police officials have been the target of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Jammu and Kashmir. They are accused of scam in government land worth Rs 25,000 crore. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has issued a CBI inquiry order in the case. It is said to be the biggest land scam in Jammu and Kashmir. The court, while commenting on the case, termed it as shameful and damaging the national interest.

Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Rajesh Bindal have given some important instructions to the CBI director. The court has asked for a team of officers of the rank above the Superintendent of Police (SP) to look into the matter. In this case, a thorough investigation has been directed by registering a case. The orders were given by the High Court on Friday, but the copy was made available on Sunday. The court has found the fault of government employees at first glance. Private people have been allowed to encroach upon government land in a large scale.

The High Court on Friday declared the controversial Illumination Act "unconstitutional". It was enacted by the State Legislature in November 2001 and implemented in March 2002. It envisaged collecting funds for hydropower generation in the state, which planned to deposit Rs 25,000 crore by transferring the land to private ownership.
