Morocco's Royal Navy coast guards have rescued 256 illegal immigrants in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean since Saturday, according to the official news agency MAP.

The immigrants, who were largely from Sub-Saharan Africa, included 41 women and 5 children, according to the report, which quoted a military source. According to the source, they were having issues on board the makeshift inflatable boats and got first aid when they were rescued.

According to media reports, Morocco has long been a transit nation for African immigrants wanting to reach Europe.   Mokhtar Gonbor, 30, summed up why most of the young men were now walking home with his modest bag of belongings draped over his shoulder.

"We don't have any food or money, and we slept on the street last night." He was returning to Morocco, despite the fact that his life there was not what he desired.
