Washington: US court has turned down the bail plea of Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana, described as a fugitive, by India for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. David Coleman Headley's childhood friend Rana (59) was arrested again on June 10 in Los Angeles on the request of India's extradition to be involved in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks case. 166 people including six Americans were killed in this attack. Rana has been declared a fugitive criminal by India.

On July 21, Justice Jacqueline Chuljian of the US District Court in Los Angeles, in her 24-page order, refused to grant bail to Rana, saying he was expected to abscond Rana. The US government opposed releasing him on bail, arguing that if he escaped to Canada, he will not be possible to give him the punishment he deserves in India.

US Assistant Attorney John J Lulejian said in court, "Rana's presence in the court cannot be ensured by granting bail on any bond. Bailing him may embarrass America in its foreign affairs and its relationship with India may worsen. "
