New Delhi: The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) on Monday shut down 28 illegal scraping units in Delhi. The destruction of damaged vehicles in these units is increasing air pollution. Under the Vehicles and off-life vehicles Act (ELV), 15 years old petrol and diesel vehicles older than 10 years are converted into scrap. The vehicles which were victims of accidents were put in scrap.

Research by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) said that about 25% of the threat to the environment is being caused by scrap chemicals. After seeing this, DPCC has completely closed down 28 illegal vehicle scraping units by examining it in Nangli Sakrati, Nilothi, Mundka, Mongalpuri, Mukundpur, Ghawar, Tikari Kalan areas. Gas cutters, grinder and welding machines have also been recovered here.

The Committee has decided to lodge a case with imposition of hefty fines. A large number of such scrap units were screened in the Mayapuri area last year.
