38 years ago today, India became the world champion at Lord's. June 25, 1983 is written in golden letters in the history of Indian Sports. India captured the World Cup for the first time with a surprise 43-run win over the West Indies in the final. Throughout the tournament, Team India surprised everyone with its performance contrary to expectations, dusting off legendary teams like Australia, England and the West Indies and making history by becoming world champions.

In the final match, two-time world champions West Indies were on the one hand, while on the other hand, India, which had performed relentlessly in both the previous World Cups. West Indies bundled out India for just 183 runs. It was not a big target for the Indies, but Balwinder Singh Sandhu bowled Gordon Greenidge for just one run to give India a tremendous success. However, Vivian Richards then batted brilliantly and hit 33 runs. Meanwhile, Richards suddenly played a high shot towards mid-wicket off Madan Lal. Captain Kapil Dev took a brilliant catch while running for a long time behind him.

Richards was to be dismissed, after which the West Indies innings collapsed. The entire team was eventually bowled out for 140. Madan Lal took three wickets for 31 runs, Mohinder Amarnath took three for 12 and Sandhu took two wickets for 32 runs to beat Lloyd's archers. Amarnath also won the Man of the Match award for his all-round performance in the final match after the semi-final. After this historic success, the Indian cricket team, under Mahendra Singh Dhoni, won the ODI World Cup again in 2011, 28 years later.
