Amid the ongoing pandemic, Karnataka witnessed its first election for the biennial Legislative Council polls. The polls for the South-East graduates, West Graduates, Northeast teachers and Bangalore teachers constituencies are conducted to fill the 4 vacancies in the 75 member council. 2,34,718 voters casting their franchise and 40 contestants are competing. Votes will be counted on November 2.

As per current situation, minority is BJP with 27 members and worked desperately to increase the number as two key bills, the APMC act amendment bill and Land reforms amendment bill were not passed the council last September. BJP will still a minority even if it wins all 4 seats, Congress has 29 members, JDS 14 and one is an independent. The three major political parties have fielded their candidates in all four seats. South-East Graduate Constituency with 15 candidates, West Graduates’ constituency with 11, Northeast teachers’ constituency with 5 candidates and Bengaluru teachers’ constituency with 9 candidates are facing the election.
Five Congress MLAs may join BJP in Karnataka, says Karnataka Deputy CM
The voters in these regions are given holiday and 549 polling stations has been arranged for the polls to take place, including auxiliary units. Following the four MLCs retirement, the election is mandated. The polls should have taken place before June 30, but were delayed because of the pandemic outbreak.
