The months of April and May bring along a lot of joy and entertainment. Yes, it is the time of the fun-filled summer vacations. However, the added delight comes with the commencement of the cricket festival in India – the Indian Premier League. In 2008, nine venues were used for the tournament – Bengaluru, Mumbai, Jaipur, Chennai, Mohali, Hyderabad, Navi Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. After ten glorious years, more than 20 grounds across the country have hosted at least one IPL match.
5. Sawai Mansingh Stadium – 13 matches
The cricket stadium is based out of Jaipur and a total of 13 IPL matches have been played there since the inaugural season in 2008. It was built during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II and seats 30,000.
4. Feroz Shah Kotla – 21 matches
The Delhi venue has hosted 21 matches since, the IPL was set up in 2008. It is the home ground of the Delhi Daredevils -- the side that has failed to impress time and again, despite featuring some talented players.
3. M Chinnaswamy Stadium – 21 matches
The Royal Challengers Bangalore’s home ground with 38,300 seating capacity, the Chinnaswamy Stadium has hosted 21 matches thus far. The IPL 2016 final was played in the Bengaluru stadium, however, the home side ended up losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad.
2. Eden Gardens – 21 matches
With a seating capacity of 66,349, it is the largest cricket stadium in India and the second largest cricket stadium in the world behind the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The iconic venue serves as the home ground for Shah Rukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders and has so far hosted 21 matches. The Eden Gardens is India’s most popular stadium.
1. MA Chidambaram Stadium – 23 matches
The Chidambaram Stadium is the home ground of IPL’s Chennai-based franchise, Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It has hosted 23 matches, the most by any stadium since the inception of the IPL. The first match that was played at this particular venue was the eighth match of IPL 2008 between CSK and Mumbai Indians.
