Islamabad: Six members of the extremist Daesh group were killed in an overnight Taliban raid in Afghanistan's northern Balkh province, a Taliban spokesman claimed on Tuesday.

Since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in August 2021, their main adversary has been the regional Daesh affiliate known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province.

Attacks by the militant group have increased, and they now also target Shiite Afghans as well as Taliban patrols.

In August 2021, the Taliban overran Afghanistan and took control as US and NATO forces left the country after 20 years of conflict.

The Taliban government has not been recognised by the international community because of the harsh measures they have implemented since taking power, including limiting rights and freedoms, particularly for women and minorities.

Three people were killed in a suicide bombing by a member of the Daesh organisation in March, including Daud Muzmal, the Taliban's governor for Balkh. Since the Taliban seized power in the middle of August 2021, Muzmal is one of the most senior Taliban officials to have died.
