New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana administered the oath of office to nine newly appointed judges of the apex court on Tuesday. The swearing-in sworn-in sworn include Judges S Oka, Vikram Nath, JK Maheshwari, Hima Kohli, Bawa Nagarathana, CT Ravikumar, MM Sundaresh, Bela M Trivedi, and PS Narasimha. In view of the Corona Protocol, CJI NV Ramana administered the oath to 9 newly appointed judges at a function held at the new auditorium of the apex court in the additional building complex near Pragati Maidan metro station.

This is the first time in the court's 70-year history that 9 judges have been sworn in at once. Their names were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium as judges of the apex court on August 17 and later approved by the central government on August 26. Their appointment letters were signed by President Ram Nath Kovind. The maximum number of judges in the Supreme Court can be 34 and only one places in the Supreme Court is lying vacant after the new judges are sworn in.

Apart from Nagratna, the third-highest judge of the Karnataka High Court, Bela M Trivedi, the fifth most senior judge of the Gujarat High Court, and Hema Kohli, chief justice of the Telangana High Court, have also been appointed to the Supreme Court. Justice Kohli was scheduled to retire on September 1 at the age of 62, as high court justices retire at the age of 62, but the age for retirement of top court judges is 65 years. Besides three women judges, Kerala High Court Judge CT Ravi Kumar and Madras High Court Judge MM Sundaresh have also been made judges in the Supreme Court.
