Hawaii has always been known for its attentive behavior towards the protection of its natural heritage. Recently it has become the very first state across the United States to have banned the use of Suntan lotions. It has taken the step to reduce the damage caused to the coral reefs by the chemicals that are used in the lotions.

David Ige, the governor of Hawaii, recently passed a bill that has led to a cease in the sale of all those sun creams that contain the chemicals, oxybenzone and octinoxate. You would be surprised to know that 80% of the brands selling sun creams have the above-mentioned chemicals in their product.

The Hawaii governor asserted, “We are blessed in Hawaii to be home to some of the most beautiful resources on the planet. But our environment is fragile and our own interaction with the earth can have everlasting impacts. This bill is a small first step worldwide to really caring about out corals and our reefs in a way that no one else anywhere in the world has done.”

As per the reports, about 25 % of the sunscreen that we apply is washed away from our skin within half hour of entering the water. Reports also suggested that 6,000 tonnes of sunscreen has been added to the oceans and hence the coral reefs.
