Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Bin Mohamad said on Tuesday that the demand of India to hand over the disputed fundamentalist campaigner Zakir Naik would not be easily fulfilled. This statement from the Malaysian PM came three days after his meeting with Zakir on Saturday.
Zakir is accused in money laundering matters, as well as being involved in terrorist activities in India. He has left India in 2016. According to the report of the New Straits Times, the Malaysian Prime Minister said that his government examines all aspects before meeting any kind of demand. They will not hand him to the Indian government so easily until the accusation is confirmed.
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Bin Mohamad had said last week that Zakir would not be handed over to Indian officials. Naik has got permission to stay permanently in Malaysia. The PM had said that Zakir could stay in Malaysia until there is no disturbance here. It is known that Malaysia has an extradition treaty with India and India has formally requested for the extradition of Naik.
On the other hand, Zakir Naik said that he thanks the Malaysian government and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Bin Mohamad for sheltering and for a fair investigation. He said that this decision has confirmed his trust in Malaysia's justice and communal harmony.
