New Delhi [India], Apr 20 (NT): The Top Court on Friday issued the directions to the Central Government to seize underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's properties.

The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice RK Agrawal refused the plea filed by Ibrahim's mother and sister, Kaskar and Haseena Parkar, challenging the verdict of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and other agencies to attach property owned by them in Mumbai as "proceeds of crime".

The Central Government had earlier lodged a detailed report before the court and said that the properties in Nagpada possessed by Ibrahim and had been acquired using "undeclared and ill-gotten income" from his illegal activities.

The underworld mafia is a designated global terrorist and wanted for a number of crimes including murder, extortion, targeted killing, drug trafficking and terrorism.

While he is believed to be residing in Pakistan, his location is not confirmed. (NT)

In 1988, the government sealed the properties under a law that permits the takeover of properties of smugglers, foreign exchange manipulators and their kins.

Worth mentioning here Dawood's mother and sister had challenged the takeover, which were initiated after the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai and claimed 257 lives. Dawood had run away from the country and the departments concerned sought to seize properties belonging to the escapee don.
