New Delhi: Scientists have been focusing on the 'llama' camel found in South America while looking for treatment for the global coronary virus coronavirus. This beautiful camel found in cold mountainous areas has been an integral part of the life of the Andes people for centuries. Scientists say that antibodies found in lamas may be successful in preventing the coronavirus. Prior to current research on the coronavirus, scientists also used the Lama's unique antibodies for research on the virus of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), middle-respiratory syndrome (Mers), AIDS, and influenza.

Researchers at the University of Texas-based Austin, the National Institutes of Health, and the University of Ghent, Belgium, have developed a new antibody by combining two copies of a special antibody of a lama camel named Winter. This antibody strongly binds the coronavirus protein that causes disease in humans. This protein is called a spike protein. The virus enters the human cell only because of this protein.

Initial tests have shown that Lama's antibodies prevent the coronavirus from infecting healthy cells. Researchers are now preparing to test it on animals from the primate group. Mindful humans and various apes come in the primate group. Clinical trials on humans will be started if these experiments are successful.
