Woman sets herself on fire in front of UP assembly in religious conversion, marriage and torture case

Lucknow: A woman has tried to set herself on ablaze in front of an assembly in Lucknow. The woman put the inflammable material on her and set herself on fire after which her body was severely burned. The incident has come from Hazratganj Thanakshetra. The woman is said to be in critical condition and has been admitted to a civil hospital by the police.

According to the information, the 35-year-old woman alleges that she was married to Akhilesh Tiwari, a resident of Maharajganj, followed by divers. The woman then changed her religion and married a young man named Asif. After the marriage, Asif moved to Saudi Arabia. It is alleged that Asif's family was constantly harassing the woman. The woman, who was bullied by torture, tried to immolate before the assembly. After receiving information, the police rushed to the spot and admitted the woman to a civil hospital, where the woman's condition is reported to be critical.

According to DCP Central Somaine Verma, a preliminary enquiry is still underway and the entire matter is under investigation. The lady is a resident of Maharajganj.  The rest of the information is also being collected. The incident of self-immolation came at a time when the Yogi government and police of UP are facing criticism over the crime related to women. In particular, the government is on the backfoot after the Hathras case.
