The festival of Onam is celebrated according to the Malayalam calendar. It starts when Chingam month comes in the Malayalam calendar. This festival is of 10 days. During this, some event is organized every day.
Onam's special 10-day situation
Atham
The first day of this festival is called Atham. During this time, Rangoli is made in the house-courtyard with yellow flowers. A sphere is increased in rangoli daily and its size increases considerably by the 10th day.
Chithira
The second day of the Onam festival is known as Chithira. During this time a circle in Rangoli is enlarged and houses are also cleaned.
Chodhi
The third day is called Chodhi. On this day also, a ball is extended in Rangoli. Purchasing is also started from the third day.
Vishakam
The fourth day of the festival is called Vishakam. Competitions are started from place to place with its introduction.
Anijham
The fifth day is known as Anijham. On this day the Valamakali Boat Race begins. People from far and wide come to see this scene.
Thriketa
The 6th day is called Thriketa. It is said that the beauty of the festival increases from this day.
Moolam
The seventh day of the festival is called Moolam. The traditional dance of Kerala is seen on this day.
Puradam
The eighth day of Onam is known as Puradam. On the 8th day, the idols of Vamana and Mahabali are set in the middle of the rangoli.
Utradom
Uthradom is the 9th day of this festival. People make traditional food in their homes on this day. It is said that Mahabali arrived in Kerala on this day.
Thiruvonam
The last or 10th day of Onam is famous as Thiruvonam. More than all the days, it is seen on this day. On this day, after worship, gifts are presented to each other. On this day, nine types of dishes are made on this day. Although many places make up to 24-25 types of dishes, which include many delicious dishes like banana chips, papadam, pulinjhi, thoran, coconut chutney, olan, avial, sambar dal, rasam, khichdi.
