New Delhi: India and Asia's richest businessman Gautam Adani has come very close to becoming the owner of the media company NDTV. He currently holds a 29.18 percent stake in NDTV. Adani Group has made an open offer to acquire an additional 26 percent stake. Now Gautam Adani has said that buying NDTV is not a business but a responsibility.
Let us tell you that the promoters of NDTV are Prannoy Roy and his wife Radhika Roy. They hold more than 32 percent stake in the company. Roy says that the Adani Group did not hold any discussions with them regarding buying NDTV. The opposition has expressed apprehension that NDTV's editorial policy will be affected if Adani becomes the owner. Gautam Adani said that freedom means that if the government has done something wrong, then you will say that it is wrong. Along with this, if the government is doing something good, then you should also have the courage to call it good. Gautam Adani has said that he has offered NDTV owner and founder Prannoy Roy to continue as chairman upon completion of the acquisition. Let us tell you that NDTV was established in 1988. In 2005, private equity firm General Atlantic bought an 8 percent stake in the company for Rs 116 crore.
The Adani-led Adani Group had in August announced the acquisition of Vishwapradhan Commercial Private Limited (VCPL). VCPL lent over Rs 400 crore to the NDTV founders a decade ago. In lieu of this loan, a provision was kept for the lender to take a 29.18 percent stake in NDTV at any point in time. Now Adani Group has made an open offer to buy an additional 26 percent stake in the company.
