Kolkata: Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has resigned from his position as the chief of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee. This announcement came following a meeting of the state unit convened to analyze the party's poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

While Chowdhury confirmed his resignation, there has been no official confirmation from the Congress leadership regarding its acceptance. Speculation is rife about who will succeed him in the role. Chowdhury remarked, "Since Mallikarjun Kharge became the Congress's national president, there was no state president. Now when the full-time President is appointed you will all come to know that."

This announcement followed a visit by Congress's Rajya Sabha member and former Union Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, to the state secretariat Nabanna, where he had a 35-minute meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Chowdhury, a five-time Lok Sabha MP from Murshidabad's Baharampur constituency, lost his seat to the Trinamool Congress's celebrity candidate and former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan.

Reports of Chowdhury's differences with the party's high command have circulated for some time, particularly concerning the party's relationship with the Trinamool Congress. He has consistently voiced his preference for an electoral understanding with the CPI(M)-led Left Front, and his disagreements with Mallikarjun Kharge surfaced during the Lok Sabha polls.

Insiders within the Bengal Congress suggest that Isha Khan Chowdhury, the current Lok Sabha member from Maldaha-Dakshin and the Congress's lone Lok Sabha MP from Bengal, is a leading contender to replace Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury as the party's state unit chief.
