Today is the birthday of India's famous businessman Aditya Vikram Birla. Born in one of India's largest business families, he saw the diversification of his group in textiles, petrochemicals and telecommunications. He was one of the first Indian businessmen to expand abroad, setting up plants in Southeast Asia, the Philippines and Egypt. By 1995 his net worth was estimated at 250 million pounds. After his death at the age of 51, his young son Kumar Mangalam Birla took charge of his group.
Birla was born on November 14, 1943, in Calcutta to businessmen Basant Kumar and Sarla Birla. His grandfather Ghanshyam Das Birla was an associate of Mahatma Gandhi and had made his fortune as the manufacturer of aluminium prospecting and Rajdoot car. After attending St Xavier's College in Calcutta, he received a degree in Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was married to Rajshree and had a daughter Vasavadatta and a son Kumar Mangalam, who is now the head of the Aditya Birla group. Aditya Vikram Birla received his Sanskrit education from late Sanskrit scholar Shri Durga Prasad Shastri in Kolkata. He was married to Rajshree Birla.
After returning to India in 1965, Birla started clothes Mills. His Eastern Spinning Mills in Calcutta (Kolkata) soon succeeded, putting the group's sinking rayon and textile business on track. Thereafter, he was made in charge of the expansion of the Corporation in the oil field. In 1969, Birla founded Indo-Thai Synthetics Company Limited, the group's first foreign company. In 1973, he founded PT Elegant Textiles, which produced spoon yarn. It marked the group's first venture in Indonesia.
