New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spent a total of Rs 252 crore in assembly elections held in Assam, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Kerala earlier this year. More importantly, 60 per cent of this amount was spent on campaigning in West Bengal alone, where the government is currently led by Trinamool Congress (TMC) Mamata Banerjee.
The BJP has informed the Election Commission about the expenditure incurred in the elections. According to it, out of Rs 2,52,02,71,753 spent by the BJP, Rs 43.81 crore was spent in Assam elections and Rs 4.79 crore in Puducherry assembly elections. In the Tamil Nadu elections, DMK had taken power from his arch-rival AIADMK. Here the BJP had spent Rs 22.97 crore on its election campaign, but here it could get only 2.6 per cent votes. In Kerala, where the present LDF returned to power, the BJP had spent Rs 29.24 crore.
It is well known that West Bengal was neither less than a battleground for the BJP. Here the party had put its experience against the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC). Here the BJP had spent Rs 151 crore in the election campaign, more than half of the total amount spent in all assembly elections. The party had set a target of securing more than 200 seats here but got only 77 seats. On the other hand, according to the expenditure details given by the TMC, he spent Rs 154.28 crore for his election campaign, which is slightly more than the BJP's expenditure.
