Lucknow: The same thing is going to happen once again in the Uttar Pradesh assembly, which happened 37 years ago today. The only difference is that there was Congress at that time and today it is replaced by BJP. After 1985, now it is going to return to power in UP. This is what is being seen in the trends so far. In the trends that have come to the fore in 403 assembly seats in the state so far, the BJP is coming back with a thumping majority.

BJP is once again going to form the government with full majority. The position of Congress seems to be weakening even from 2017. In 2017, Congress had won 7 seats and till now it seems to be leading in only 3 seats. If trends change in results, BJP is going to break the 37-year-old Congress record in UP. The Congress came to power in the 1980 and 1985 assembly elections with an absolute majority. But after that the party could never form the government back in the state. After the Emergency, when the assembly elections were held in Uttar Pradesh in 1977, the Congress suffered a shameful defeat. It was reduced to just 47 seats.

At the same time, the Janata Party got 352 seats out of 425. At that time there used to be 425 assembly seats in UP. However, the instability in the Janata Party government remained high. The result was that in 1980 the assembly of UP was dissolved and President's rule was imposed. Assembly elections were held again in 1980. Congress made a resounding comeback and won 309 seats out of 425. The opposition could not win even a hundred and fifty seats. The same trend continued in the 1985 elections as well and the Congress returned to power after winning 269 seats. However, factionalism prevailed in both these governments. In its 10 years of government, Congress gave 5 CMs. Since then no government has been repeated in UP.
