Veteran Indian boxer MC Mary Kom was forced to withdraw in the middle of the 48kg trials of the Commonwealth Games after suffering a knee injury. The 6-time world champion bent her left knee in the first round of the 48kg semi-finals. She will not be able to play in the Commonwealth Games in which she became the first Indian woman boxer to win a gold medal in the 2018 stage. With her withdrawal, Haryana's Neetu had made it to the final of the Commonwealth Games trials at the Indira Gandhi International Stadium here.

The Indian Boxers' Federation (BFI) said in a statement that six-time world champion Mary Kom has withdrawn from the ongoing women's boxing trials for the 2022 Commonwealth Games due to an injury. London Olympics bronze medallist Mary Kom fell in the ring in the first round of the bout. The 39-year-old got up and tried to compete, but after being hit by a 2-wicket haul, her balance was disturbed and she sat down with her left leg. She had to walk out of the ring after this and the referee declared Neetu the winner.

Neetu, who won a gold medal at the prestigious Strandja Memorial Tournament on her debut this year, is now set to face Manju Rani for a place in the Commonwealth Games squad. The most successful Indian boxer was withdrawing from the World Championships and the Asian Games to focus on the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham next month.
