Washington: A 20-year-old Indian-origin student has been murdered in his hostel in the US state of Indiana, police said. His Korean roommate has been detained in connection with the case. Varun Manish Chheda of Indiana was found dead at McCutcheon Hall on the western side of the campus, police said. He was studying at Purdue University. Media reports quoted the school's police chief as saying that another university student was arrested on Wednesday on charges of murder.

Earlier, four members of a kidnapped Sikh family were found dead in a garden in California, USA. The family of Harsi Pind in Hoshiarpur, Punjab was kidnapped on Monday. Purdue University Police Chief Leslie Viete said in a press briefing on Wednesday morning that Ji Min "Jimmy" Sha, a junior cyber security chief from Korea and international student, called the police on Wednesday around 12:45 am to report the death. However, not much information has been given about the details of the call.

Officials said the incident took place in a room on the first floor of McCutcheon Hall. Manish was studying data science at Chheda University. According to media reports, Chief Viette said that he believed the attack was carried out without any provocation.
