Aizawl: As per the Handbook 2020 released by the Mizoram State Department of Economics and Statistics released on Monday, 51,691 blood samples were tested during 2019-2020 in which 2,339 people were diagnosed with AIDS. In 2018-19, 2,237 people were found to be HIV positive in 65,615 samples and 716 people died due to the disease. At least 443 people died due to complications from AIDS in Mizoram during the financial year 2019-2020.

According to the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), Mizoram has the dubious distinction of being the most AIDS-prevailing state in the country, with 2.32 percent of its total population of 10.91 lakh (2011 census) being infected. Mizoram recorded its first HIV positive case in October 1990. According to the Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS), 23,092 people, including 1,972 pregnant women, were diagnosed with AIDS and 2,877 died from the disease from October 1990 to September 2020.

More than 78 per cent of the HIV positive cases in the state were sexually transmitted, while about 20 per cent of the cases were transmitted through needle sharing by intravenous drug users.
 According to MSACS, it is estimated that Mizoram In the U.S., about 1.19 per 1,000 people suffer from AIDS. The incidence rate of AIDS was highest among youth aged 25-34, tagged at 42.59 percent, followed by those in the age group of 35-49 at 26.49 percent.
