Lucknow witnessed the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) calling for an online assembly of its members on Wednesday. The purpose of this meeting was to engage in discussions regarding the drafted proposal concerning the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). In a previous correspondence, the Secretary of the Law Commission of India had requested AIMPLB to provide a well-considered response by seeking opinions and ideas from the general public regarding the UCC.

Addressing this matter, the Secretary General of AIMPLB emphasized that the issue had been previously examined, and the commission's predecessor had arrived at a conclusion that the implementation of UCC is 'neither necessary nor desirable'. Additionally, AIMPLB requested a six-month extension to adequately prepare an appropriate response, involving religious organizations, individuals, and public-spirited persons.

In a previous executive meeting, AIMPLB passed a resolution stating that the enforcement of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would be deemed an 'unnecessary' measure. Instead, they advocated for the maintenance and effective implementation of the Places of Worship Act 1991, while considering religious conversion as a matter of "Freedom of religion".

To further explore the perspectives of stakeholders on the Uniform Civil Code, a meeting of the Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice was conducted on Monday. During the meeting, the Department of Legal Affairs, Legislative Department, and the Law Commission of India shared their views in response to the notice issued by the Law Commission on June 14.

Opposition MPs emphasized the importance of taking into account the comprehensive nature of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which encompasses not only family law but also matters concerning all religions, castes, and communities within society. They stressed the need to consider all sections of society.

The concept of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has been a subject of discussion for the past four years, and it has regained prominence due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's endorsement of the uniform law. PM Modi emphasized that the country cannot operate under two separate laws and highlighted that the Uniform Civil Code is an integral part of the Constitution.

"Today, people are being incited in the name of UCC. How can the country function with two different laws? The Constitution emphasizes equal rights... The Supreme Court has also called for the implementation of UCC. These individuals from the Opposition are playing politics based on vote banks," PM Modi stated during his address to booth level workers in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
