NEW DELHI: Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi today amid the raging debate over the implementation of the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country days after Prime Minsiter unequivocally said that the "country cannot be run on two laws". 

 This likely discussion comes just days after the Prime Minister unequivocally stated that "the country cannot be run on two laws." In light of this, the meeting aims to consider the UCC draft proposed by Uttarakhand, which is expected to serve as a possible framework for the central law.

The meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah, which took place late Monday night, preceded this development. Addressing the media on Tuesday, Chief Minister Dhami highlighted that an expert committee is currently reviewing the opinions of over 2.35 lakh individuals in the state, encompassing various segments of society.

"The collective input of intellectuals, the UCC committee, and experts has been gathered from more than 2.35 lakh people. Additionally, consultations have taken place with religious and other organizations. All these suggestions are being compiled to present a comprehensive draft," stated CM Dhami. When questioned about the possibility of the Uttarakhand UCC draft serving as a template for the Central law, Chief Minister Dhami responded, "Before arriving at any decision, it is imperative to consider all aspects."

Dhami had previously announced on Sunday that the UCC expert committee, currently examining the subject, will soon submit the draft. He took to Twitter to express, "As promised to the people of our state, on June 30, the committee responsible for preparing the Uniform Civil Code draft concluded its work. The Uniform Civil Code will soon be implemented in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. Jai Hind, Jai Uttarakhand!"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's robust support for the UCC has thrust it back into the spotlight. PM Modi emphasized that the country cannot function with two sets of laws and reiterated that the Uniform Civil Code is an integral part of the Constitution. The UCC advocates the creation of a single law applicable to all religious communities in matters concerning marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

"Today, people are being incited in the name of the UCC. How can a country operate with two laws? The Constitution also upholds the principles of equal rights... The Supreme Court has also called for the implementation of the UCC. These opposition parties are merely playing vote bank politics," said PM Modi.
