NEW DELHI: The legendary Sri Lankan cricket bowler Ajantha Mendis has announced his retirement from cricket. Mendis said goodbye to all three formats of cricket on Wednesday. Mendis had been out of the Sri Lankan team since 2015, and he decided to quit cricket because of lack of a chance in the national team. He took 152 wickets in ODIs, 70 in Tests and 66 in T20.

His best performance in ODIs was against Team India, and in 2008, the bowler sent six indian batsmen to the pavilion for 13 runs in the Asia Cup final. Mendis is the only bowler in the world who has done 6 wickets twice in T20 cricket. In 2011, Mendis took six wickets for just 16 runs in the Pallekal T20 against Australia.

Mendis then took 6 wickets for just 8 runs in Hambantota against Zimbabwe which is the best performance of any bowler in T20 Internationals. Mendis also managed to take four wickets in an innings four times in his T20 career. Ajanta Mendis had not only made a big splash in her short Test career, not just the T20. Mendis made his Test debut against India in 2008 and he hit 8 wickets for 132 runs in the match. Mendis becomes the first Sri Lankan bowler to take 8 wickets in the Debut Test. Mendis took 26 wickets at an average of just 18.38 in the series, which is the best performance of any bowler in the Debut Test Series (3 matches).
