NEW DELHI: Akasa Air, India's newest airline, launched its first service on the Bangalore-Mumbai route on Friday, enabling it to provide twice-daily flights in each direction. The airline had previously successfully taken off on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad and Bangalore-Kochi routes.
The airline will start operating an additional daily flight between Bangalore and Mumbai starting on August 30 and another starting on September 19. To improve connectivity across all of India, the airline has also established a new route between Bangalore and Chennai, which will start operating on September 10.
Akasa Air has already announced flights for six routes spanning five cities, including Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Bangalore, and Chennai. This is in keeping with the airline's objective of using a staged strategy to expand its network throughout India.
Praveen Iyer, co-founder of the airline and its chief commercial officer, spoke on the inaugural flight and the new route: "With the beginning of commercial service on the Bangalore-Mumbai route, we have accomplished yet another significant milestone. We think that robust connectivity between these cities is essential as a driving force behind the quick advancement of our nation's technical and industrial strength. We are pleased to provide connectivity between the two important aviation centres that are among the busiest airports in the nation.
The fourth city we are connecting to Bangalore is Chennai as we continue to grow this significant sector. We will start operating twice-daily flights on this new route on September 10." The airline received its third aircraft on August 16 after beginning its commercial operations with just two planes.
By the end of March 2023, Akasa Air will have a fleet of 18 aircraft, and over the following four years, the airline will add another 54 aircraft, bringing its total fleet to 72.
