Haryana is witnessinga fiercely competitive election today, as more than 2 crore voters head to the polls to choose 90 state assembly members in a single-phase election. The outcome will shape the political careers of key figures such as current Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, JJP leader Dushyant Chautala, along with 1,027 other candidates.

As voting for the 2024 Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections wraps up, all eyes are now on the exit poll results. These predictions, based on voter feedback, will be released by various agencies starting later today. Pollsters such as Axis My India, C-Voter, Nielsen, and Chanakya are expected to announce their projections shortly after voting concludes in Haryana’s 90-seat assembly election.

Jammu & Kashmir, which voted in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, will also see exit poll predictions released today. The official election results for both states are scheduled to be declared on October 8.

Accuracy of Past Exit Polls

Exit polls are designed to gauge public sentiment before the official results. However, their accuracy has often been questioned. For instance, during the 2014 Jammu & Kashmir elections, exit polls correctly predicted the PDP as the largest party, though the actual seat distribution was slightly different. This time, the National Conference (NC) and Congress are contesting as allies, while the BJP and PDP remain major contenders.

In Haryana, previous exit polls had incorrectly predicted the BJP securing an average of 43 seats, while the actual results saw the party winning 40. Similarly, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, several exit polls failed to predict the outcome accurately, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) underperforming compared to predictions.

Stakes in the Haryana Election

The BJP is hoping for a third consecutive victory in Haryana, while the Congress aims to break its decade-long stint in opposition. Other key players in the state’s election include the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).

Despite their occasional inaccuracy, exit polls continue to generate widespread interest ahead of the official results. It remains to be seen how closely this year’s predictions will align with the actual outcomes in both Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir.
